Healthier East Orange Coalition 2015 Cause Driven Impacts

The Healthier East Orange Coalition has been working together to promote healthier living in East Orange for three years. After successfully building a playground in 2012, the coalition developed urban walking paths with 2013 and 2014 Shaping NJ Grants. This year our goal is to have our Urban Hike season kick-off in June; once we have the kickoff we plan to host a summer in the Park Walking Series, add two new historical markers on the paths and create a map of the HIKE paths.
Last year, with funding from Shaping NJ, we conducted a community-wide assessment of the opportunities and obstacles facing East Orange families in planning, preparing healthy and nutritious meals. The survey revealed a great desire among residents and city leadership for a community garden. Funding from Shaping NJ will help the Healthier East Orange Coalition plan and plant a Community Garden, while engaging new partners in our coalition. Specifically, we plan to conduct a focused community survey to determine what to plant in the garden; Hire a Master Gardner to guide the community through the entire cycle of the garden, from preparation to planting, cultivation and harvest; Engage local nutritionists in teaching community members how to use the harvested produce and host community celebrations to open the garden and at harvest time. The garden will have a special section just for kids and we will encourage families to participate in gardening activities together.
Among our many partners in the Healthier East Orange Coalition are the American Diabetes Association, the City of East Orange, Office of the Mayor, East Orange Health & Human Services Department, East Orange Police Department, East Orange General Hospital, ShopRite, America’s Grow-A-Row, the East Orange Historical Society and the East Orange YMCA. Key allies are church pastors and church leaders, the East Orange Fire Department and the East Orange Chamber of Commerce
