On Friday, May 1, 2015 the Burlington County Community Action Program Head Start/ Early Head Start along with the following community partners Burlington County Health Department, Pi Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, G3 Health & Fitness, Burlington Department of Health and Human Services, WIC, SNAP, Ameri-Health, Horizon, Parents as Teachers, Dr. Lisman Dental Associates Office, Burlington County Sheriff Department, Dr. Trina Gipson-Jones, Chef Delilah Winder, American Heart Association and the Foster Parents Group hosted a day of wellness and interactive fitness fun for all ages!
Community Partners, along with regular scheduled meetings are essential tools we use to meet and accomplish the goals of the project. Weather and coordination of community events/schedules is a major challenge. Our hometown hero Mr. Kendall Brunson, the director of the Parks and Recreation Department was instrumental in assisting us in securing the JF Kennedy Center for our May 1st event. This location ensured our event could take place rain or shine. Community partnership helps provide smoother networking and bring more partners to the project. Mr. Brunson participation is key to community outreach, community advertisement and organization for the June 13th Get Outdoors Day. His office is responsible for all necessary permits and logistics. A set meeting schedule ensures the overall project is moving forward and challenges are addressed. The May 1st event was a success due to community partnership and community donations of giveaways! Participants love hands on interactive programs, incentives and giveaways!
Two Hundred (200) plus were in attendance on May 1st. The day included a variety of wellness workshops; a 1 mile walk around the JF Kennedy Center outdoor track and indoor Zumba; a fitness course with Tarae Morton from the Health Department; a Home Gardening session with Toni Price a Master Gardener and Margaret Cammerieri from the American Heart Association. The American Heart Association gave away free live plants for planting in home gardens. Chef Delilah conducted a cooking demonstration on healthy snacks and moderated our annual healthy cooking contest. Six contestants prepared a healthy meal using fresh limes, fresh lemons, fresh avocado, wheat crackers and roasted chicken. Chef Delilah discussed the health benefit of each item and judged the contest. The winner won a Ninja Mega Kitchen!
Participants that walked around the outdoor track and visited the community vendor tables were eligible to win fitness equipment and pedometers. The Sheriff Department gave away bicycle helmets and discussed child seat safety. Our special guest speaker Shaream Moneak who appeared on the Dr. Oz show, demonstrated the importance of humor to reduce stress and shared that laughter is medicine for the body.
Save the date: The next event is National Get Outdoors Day and ribbon cutting for the playground at Mill Creek Park in Willingboro, Beverly-Rancocas Road, New Jersey on Saturday, June 13, 2015.
