Wayne is ready to get people stepping and eating better

The entrance to High Mountain Park’s Red Trail will be enhanced with a portion of a $10,000 grant from Atlantic Health System and Chilton Medical Center.28

Our community health initiative is to improve the well being of the people of Wayne, New Jersey by enhancing recreational facilities and parks that focus on increasing opportunities for physical activity and by developing action plans that focus on promoting healthy food choices, which is critical to reversing the childhood obesity epidemic.  We will focus on enhancing the existing trailhead entrance for the Red Trail section of High Mountain Park off University Place and conduct a needs assessment in the area surrounding William Paterson University and on the college campus to identify nutritional gaps that prevent college students from accessing healthy and nutritional foods.  These plans will include providing healthier food options in vending machines, and expanding the use of students’ “Pioneer Card” to include restaurants and supermarkets that offer healthier diets.  We will be partnering with the ShopRite of Wayne to offer educational programs to students and other area residents on healthy eating and nutrition.
