Wednesday, July 25, 2014 15 Women, 7 children, 1 Dietician and 2 YMCA Staff descended on ShopRite Supermarket in Elizabeth NJ, prepared to take on the store and learn how to eat healthy.
Michele Ali, Trinitas Regional Medical Center (RMC), Dietician who has been teaching the woman who live in our Supportive Housing Program called Madison House on healthy eating using a power point decided that hands on was best and prepared to accompany the group to the local ShopRite. Michelle came prepared with a store map, tour preparation sheet, nutritional education and lots of energy.
The ladies were so excited, to board the bus, sponsored by our partnership with the City of Elizabeth.
As they exited the bus, Michelle and Alane met them right in front the store where the learning began.
Michelle discussed preparation for shopping; having your list, reviewing the store flyer for sales, start with the outside lanes of the store (that is where fresh healthy food can be found) and of course the #1 rule “Never shops when you are hungry”. All agreed this was a great rule to follow for a healthier shopping experience.
So much to learn so little time. Michelle took the ladies and children up and down the aisles stopping frequently to engage everyone in conversation about the benefits of choosing fish and lean proteins, how to choose fresh fruits and vegetables or even frozen which might be the more economical and even a healthier choice since many are freeze dried and keep a lot of the nutrients. In the cheese and butter aisles the benefits of margarine was discussed and how to choose the healthiest types, American Cheese might be the least healthy with high sodium and fat content, maybe that sharp cheddar would be healthier and a better value too. Fruit snacks look good but watch out for the sugar and proceed to the fresh fruit aisle where grapes are a great alternative.
To complete the day everyone received a ShopRite gift card for attending and 5 of the ladies received an extra card for their great answers and participation. At the end the families were let loose to shop. Everyone purchased some great items and got back on the bus prepared to make a healthy dinner for themselves and their families.
What a great day! Thanks Michelle for all of the great information and Tanisha for her support with the families in the garden and our shopping trip.
