Shaping Elizabeth Community Health Forum – June 18, 2014

Is Your Zip Code a Predictor of Your Health?

Shaping Elizabeth is sponsoring a Community Health Forum on Wednesday June 18, 2014. Our goal is to engage with 70-80 members of the community to raise awareness of health equity and the impact on the Elizabeth Community.

The morning will begin with a welcome from Krystal R. Canady, CEO The Gateway Family YMCA setting the purpose for the day and introducing City of Elizabeth Mayor J. Christian Bollwage, who will speak on the City’s response to improving healthy living including the recent passage of a Complete Streets Resolution. The City of Elizabeth will be working with The Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center, Rutgers The State University of New Jersey and begin to assess one corridor in Elizabeth along Morris Avenue.

Our Key Note speaker Darrin Anderson, Sr., PhD Deputy Director, New Jersey Partnership for Healthy Kids will set the stage painting a picture of the Elizabeth Community then describing some successful outcomes from five communities in NJ engaged with the Partnership for Healthy Kids.
Community members will be engaged in conversations with a leader from Shaping Elizabeth to collect data and information on their thoughts about living healthy in Elizabeth looking at both the why and then how people do or do not become physical active or eat healthy in Elizabeth. Then ideas for improvement will be shared through social media and the YMCA website.

Wrapping the morning up will be Joseph L. McTernan, BS, MBA Senior Director, Community & Clinical Services from Trinitas Regional Medical Center. Joe will outline the hospitals response to the community needs assessment conducted by the hospital as well as bringing it all together with the need for the community to work together for successful policy and environmental changes to support healthy living.

By the end of the morning we will have met our goals of:
– Raising awareness of health equity issues and Shaping Elizabeth
– Engage 70-80 community leaders and residents in a conversation about healthy equity, the needs of the Elizabeth Community and possible solutions to improve nutrition and increase physical activity to prevent chronic disease and reduce obesity
– Identify 5-6 new members for the Shaping Elizabeth Team
– Use Social Media and YMCA website to communicate about the forum both before and after.
