The Raritan Valley YMCA is excited to be a part of the ShapingNJ pilot project. The YMCA has always created an environment where daily physical activity and healthy eating was a primary focus.
Over the last two years our YMCA has been developing a community garden at the YMCA to help kids connect with the earth and to see the direct process of bringing food to their table. This year we have received the 2013 Youth Garden Grant Award sponsored by Home Depot and presented by The National Gardening Association. This grant will allow us to expand our garden program by providing much needed equipment and curriculum materials.
Additionally, the Raritan Valley YMCA has spent the month preparing for our Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards (HEPA) Workshop in March for our day care community. An invitation letter has been drafted, a mailing list is being complied, and the workshop contents and hand outs are being prepared. We will also announce and distribute at our NJPHK meeting on February 19th.
Additionally, staff at our own Y is looking closely at updating its curriculum and parent communications to align more with the HEPA standards. This is an exciting project and our YMCA staff team is excited to get things going.
