East Orange YMCA Helps Shape New Jersey By Snacking Smarter

You Are Y!

The East Orange YMCA is for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  We focus our work in three key areas, because nurturing the potential of kids, helping people live healthier, and supporting our neighbors are fundamental to strengthening communities.

"Go," "Slow," "Whoa" Stickers

"Go," "Slow," and "Whoa" Posters

The first of the two projects we decided to concentrate our efforts on for ShapingNJ  is the lack of healthy snack choices in vending machines and our community’s role and expertise in providing nutritional information to the public.  As a means to help prevent childhood obesity, our branch is a partner with The Horizon Foundation of New Jersey and we have adapted their initiative “Healthy U” in our After School and Preschool Programs, which is designed to combat this widespread epidemic and also incorporate nutrition education.  Their CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) Program includes “Go,” “Slow,” and “Whoa” foods as a means to recognize foods that should be eaten either every day, sometimes or once in a while.  The start-up vending machine sites include East Orange General Hospital, East Orange Public Library, Cicely L. Tyson Middle School and High School.

Don’t miss our next post for our second project – East Orange H.I.K.E.

All for you,

East Orange YMCA
